Slender Man was created in 2009 on the Something Awful forum during a paranormal photo manipulation contest. A user named Eric Knudsen, known by the pseudonym "Victor Surge", posted several edited images depicting a tall, faceless figure watching children in unsettling situations. The character quickly became a massive success and was embraced by the Internet community, which expanded the myth through stories, videos, games, and collaborative projects.
